Our Activities

Battery storage systems help to stabilise and optimise the electricity grid

Battery storage systems are regarded as a key technology for grid stability and the cost-effectiveness of the electricity grid, and are therefore a vital component of a successful energy transition in Germany: They enable load shifting, i.e. they store energy when demand is low and feed it back into the grid when demand is high, smoothing out price spikes as well as balancing out fluctuating yields from renewable energy sources. Furthermore, they reduce both electricity transmission costs – as they can be deployed regionally – and congestion as well as redispatch costs. In short: they are beneficial to the grid, because they relieve pressure on it during periods of congestion and thus help to keep the grid stable – thereby making an important contribution to the security of electricity supply.

EDF power solutions has been active in the battery storage sector in Germany since 2018. The full-service package covers all stages of technical planning, regulatory planning, procurement and construction management, financing and subsequent asset management.

The decentralised grid booster – a true all-rounder

The so-called decentralised grid booster is a network of battery modules located at various points across the electricity grid to provide services that benefit the grid: Among other things, it ensures an effective response to grid bottlenecks, as it  steps in within seconds of an occurring bottleneck to resolve it – this allows power lines to be utilised to a greater extent and grid costs to be saved. The optimisation of grid performance also means a reduction in redispatch measures – which has a positive impact on grid charges for all customers.

EDF power solutions Deutschland will build and operate a decentralised grid booster with a total capacity of 250 megawatts for the transmission system operator Amprion GmbH.

The hybrid park: Renewable energy and storage

Our hybrid parks combine wind, solar power and battery storage into a sustainable and integrated system. The storage system saves energy when there is plenty of wind as well as solar power available and feeds it back into the grid at times of high demand. In this way, it balances out both fluctuating weather and demand peaks, reduces the strain on the grid and makes green electricity more predictable and cost-effective. At the same time, we use plants more efficiently: less curtailment, a higher proportion of regional renewable energy – also through demand-driven temporary storage and feeding electricity from our own plant into the grid.

Why we are the right partner

As part of the international EDF power solutions group, we draw on extensive experience and technologies in project development, procurement, integration and operation of battery storage systems. A strong track record: EDF power solutions is the world’s leading provider of battery storage systems, with over 800 MW in operation and 1.2 GW under construction.

In Germany, we have been implementing battery storage solutions successfully for industrial companies for many years; you can find an overview here.

Our motivation

“The battery storage sector is currently experiencing significant growth in Germany, particularly in support of the integration of renewable energy sources to reduce the carbon footprint. We are applying our expertise to drive forward the energy transition and improve grid performance.”
